Merry Thanksgiving !

Someone in my (very large McCooey Magnier Fagan Henderson) family has already purchased a Christmas tree!  What?  It’s a tabletop Christmas tree but nonetheless!  My first thought was: “What! It’s too soon! We haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet!” ; a reaction anyone who was a child growing up on the east coast mid-century would have.  But then, on second thought, I realized what a great idea this actually really is.  I mean, I’ve already started listening to A Charlie Brown Christmas, so why not begin decorating to accompany it?  Upon further thought, I appreciated the idea because to buy a tabletop Christmas tree now will eliminate a rushed experience in a mere week and will bring all the holidays into view (and scent) right away to enjoy.  So I went to a few places where I like to shop online that sell live (not fake, but beware some are an arrangement of boughs) tabletop Christmas trees to share with you.  I’m putting my order in now ;) Gobble Gobble !

Jackson & Perkins.  They have been around a long time; since 1872 to be exact. Their mail-order business got started from their exhibit at the 1939  World's Fair in New York.  Richard loved that World’s Fair and remembered it.  We enjoyed experiencing an original advertising poster from the Fair; proudly framed and displayed in our home in Georgetown.  Maybe that’s why he liked ordering from them.  Anyway you can own your very own live spruce tree, decorated and ready to enjoy.

L.L. Bean.   What could be more Christmassy than a live spruce from Maine?  And what could be more synonymous with Maine than L.L. Bean? My gosh you could almost argue that L.L. Bean is synonymous with Christmas!  I remember our parents taking us to Maine when we were very young and there were only 7 of us. The entire state was fragrant!   We brought back Balsam Fir pine cone sachets that lasted seemingly for decades. I buy new ones every now and then. We brought back Balsam incense log cabins too.  Anytime I catch a whiff I am hurtled back to Maine and I am 8 years old again.  The little Balsam incense log cabins were Richard’s favorite, too.  He went to summer camp in Maine every year in his youth and loved it. That’s where he discovered his love and talent for horsemanship.  We lit the little log cabins every Christmas.  Maybe that’s why he liked ordering from L.L. Bean.

If you prefer a fuller “look” , or prefer Balsam, LL Bean offers an arrangement of boughs. Not a live tree, but who can resist Balsam from Maine!

The Vermont Country Store.  Like LL Bean, The Vermont Country Store offers an arrangement of boughs and it has a hand-tied Scottish Highland plaid bow, real pine cones, faux berries, and golden jingle bells. There is a foam center for easy watering.  I love Vermont and have had a chance to visit family there recently.  Also like Maine it has a profound effect on me – that great feeling that comes with being out in nature with the added bonus of being with family.  How blessed we are.

I started writing a book just for fun, saying some of my perfect words. After a while I just stopped writing it, as I was handed a lot of work. Now that I have time, I intend to finish it.
