I'm getting ready to attend High Point market this weekend !!!! "The High Point Market, held in High Point, North Carolina, is the largest home furnishings industry trade show in the world, with over 10 million square feet by roughly 2000 exhibitors throughout about 180 buildings." My back aches just thinking about all the walking I will be doing !!!! But my heart beats with excitement, anticipating all the new furniture and furnishings I will find and all the new people I will meet. I'll bring back great ideas for all of you !!

Ebbie's B&B

I enjoy working during the winter. I don't know about you guys, but I find myself forced to stay indoors most of the time. That doubles the time I spend with myself thinking about work. I met one of my clients today and she wants me to fully design her B&B townhouse in Silver Spring, MD by Feb 2nd. Let it snow!

Design Inspiration: The fireplace in the living room.  It is a large, stunning,  floor to ceiling stone fireplace with different shades of brown and gray; and hints of chestnut.  We can focus on regional locals for room motifs.

The Bethesda Bachelor Pad

Happy New Year!!!!!  We are right in the middle of an exciting design project: an entire home for a client.  The house is a traditional four bedroom, three bath ranch on a large piece of property.  We’ve named it The Bethesda Bachelor Pad.

Our client doesn’t want to worry about a thing.  He wants to be able to move in and enjoy a fully designed and functioning home in every detail, right down to soaps in the bathroom.  He would like us to to create a cozy “man cave” but at the same time have it be sophisticated and stylish for entertaining.  To me the quintessential icon of the modern American bachelor is the Eames Chair and Lounge, so I suggested that we design around this.

Design Name: The Bethesda Bachelor Pad

The Challenge: To create a cozy “man cave” but at the same time have it be sophisticated and stylish for entertaining.

My Recommendations:

Design Mix: Mid-century Modern. Traditional. Contemporary.

Design Inspiration: The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are furnishings made of molded plywood and leather, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. They are officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671) and were released in 1956 after years of development by designers. It was the first chair that the Eameses designed for a high-end market. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.  - Source Wikipedia

Downtown DC Hotel American Heritage Design

Update:  I had to change the design a bit.  There is no way I am able to use reproductions of George Washington prints a la 1789.  The quality of the reproductions is subpar in my opinion.  Besides there are only two places on earth you should be able to see them; and they are the originals: the Library of Congress and Clyde's 1789 restaurant!  Nothing can replace the originals.  So I am switching to paintings by an unknown artist.  I will keep you posted.

Install has begun at 77 H Street NW!  This is such an exciting time in the design process.  The design ideas and concepts have been finalized and approved.  Measurements and budgets have been quadrupled checked.  Purchasing has been done.  Deliveries and inspection of items are happening quickly and the install of the design is upon us!  A great location in Downtown DC: right next to Gonzaga, down the street and to the left is Georgetown University Law Center and to the right Union Station!  More to come!

Thanksgiving Eve 2017

Hustle and bustle !  No time to do everything !  Here is a helpful cooking tip for you !  Just kidding.  I have no idea how to cook; other than the basic of basics.  Tonight I had popcorn for dessert.  It was delicious.  I recommend popcorn.  I'm going to stick with my day jobs: designing for hospitality and the home, painting oil portraits, and framing.  And yes, the counter tops in my kitchen are marble.  I will have to honor the marble and learn how to cook.  Happy Thanksgiving Eve 2017!

Merry Thanksgiving !

Someone in my (very large McCooey Magnier Fagan Henderson) family has already purchased a Christmas tree!  What?  It’s a tabletop Christmas tree but nonetheless!  My first thought was: “What! It’s too soon! We haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet!” ; a reaction anyone who was a child growing up on the east coast mid-century would have.  But then, on second thought, I realized what a great idea this actually really is.  I mean, I’ve already started listening to A Charlie Brown Christmas, so why not begin decorating to accompany it?  Upon further thought, I appreciated the idea because to buy a tabletop Christmas tree now will eliminate a rushed experience in a mere week and will bring all the holidays into view (and scent) right away to enjoy.  So I went to a few places where I like to shop online that sell live (not fake, but beware some are an arrangement of boughs) tabletop Christmas trees to share with you.  I’m putting my order in now ;) Gobble Gobble !

Jackson & Perkins.  They have been around a long time; since 1872 to be exact. Their mail-order business got started from their exhibit at the 1939  World's Fair in New York.  Richard loved that World’s Fair and remembered it.  We enjoyed experiencing an original advertising poster from the Fair; proudly framed and displayed in our home in Georgetown.  Maybe that’s why he liked ordering from them.  Anyway you can own your very own live spruce tree, decorated and ready to enjoy.

L.L. Bean.   What could be more Christmassy than a live spruce from Maine?  And what could be more synonymous with Maine than L.L. Bean? My gosh you could almost argue that L.L. Bean is synonymous with Christmas!  I remember our parents taking us to Maine when we were very young and there were only 7 of us. The entire state was fragrant!   We brought back Balsam Fir pine cone sachets that lasted seemingly for decades. I buy new ones every now and then. We brought back Balsam incense log cabins too.  Anytime I catch a whiff I am hurtled back to Maine and I am 8 years old again.  The little Balsam incense log cabins were Richard’s favorite, too.  He went to summer camp in Maine every year in his youth and loved it. That’s where he discovered his love and talent for horsemanship.  We lit the little log cabins every Christmas.  Maybe that’s why he liked ordering from L.L. Bean.

If you prefer a fuller “look” , or prefer Balsam, LL Bean offers an arrangement of boughs. Not a live tree, but who can resist Balsam from Maine!

The Vermont Country Store.  Like LL Bean, The Vermont Country Store offers an arrangement of boughs and it has a hand-tied Scottish Highland plaid bow, real pine cones, faux berries, and golden jingle bells. There is a foam center for easy watering.  I love Vermont and have had a chance to visit family there recently.  Also like Maine it has a profound effect on me – that great feeling that comes with being out in nature with the added bonus of being with family.  How blessed we are.

Hi!  I'm Back to Blogging!

Hi again everyone!.  It’s been a while since my last post; well, years actually.  I’ve been navigating my way through this life without Richard, who is forever a part of me. Excitingly, I begin the design install for long-term stay unit for a hotel in Downtown DC next week.  I will let you know how it goes. The Design Board is pictured here.  They wanted something evoking the city.  I thought: “What could be more Washington DC  than celebrating our American Heritage?”  As you can imagine, it was impossible for me to avoid taking inspiration from Richard’s eloquent interior design of the 1789 restaurant in Georgetown, owned and operated by Clyde’s for decades now.  The palette for the project is my interpretation of red, white and blue. To achieve a contemporary and relevant experience for the guests I balance masculine and feminine, modern and traditional, dark and light elements.  Let me know what you think!

Great Prospects for This Brand New Year, 2015 !

According to data from STR, Inc.: "In year-over-year measurements, the [hospitality] industry’s occupancy rose 5.9 percent to 49.5 percent.  Average daily rate increased 5.7 percent to finish the week at US$102.60. Revenue per available room for the week was up 11.9 percent to finish at US$50.78." Persona Studios is poised anew to help hotels, clubs, and restaurants "keep the party going", as Richard would say.  In addition to our design mark in the past, we are coming up with new and modern approaches to the classic sporting, fine-dining, and city vibes.
------
Related, the NRF showed significant growth occurring in online retail purchasing year-over-year from consumers 18 years and older.  Moreover, CIT's Harris Poll shows that while only 10-13% of the large retailers sales come from online purchasing, the trend is up and the slice of the pie is increasing.  Their stats on sporting apparel follow suit and bodes well for our Trophy Ceremony and upcoming Medal Ceremony sporting labels.  These labels have been designed with you and Tombs in mind.  The Trophy Ceremony is the arena in which one striving athlete finally becomes crowned champion.  We want everyone to feel empowered by this idea and ideal.  We want everyone to be able to have it with them, even when they aren't in the Tombs.   That striving and achieving is what the Tombs celebrates and our labels let everyone feel great anywhere!
-----
We have exciting ideas for you this year.  There's a lot to look forward to, a lot to be grateful for, and a lot of people who need your help too.  Terrible grammar but true nonetheless.  Richard will be proud and I look forward to serving you in every way I can.
-----
So, may all your dreams come true and let's hit the ground running this 2015 !
